Breanna Sinclaire

This week’s lesson features Breanna Sinclaire, the first transgender person to sing the National Anthem at a professional sporting event!

Breanna Sinclaire grew up struggling with her gender identity. She was bullied in school and her family did not support her transition. She had to sing as a tenor in her school choirs up until the end of her college career even though she wanted to sing as a soprano. When she graduated from high school, Breanna went to the California Institute of the Arts to study voice. Although Breanna had to face many obstacles, she didn’t let homelessness, harassment, or negativity get in the way of earning her degree. Breanna is an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and uses her platform to uplift others.

As You Listen...

  • Breanna Sinclaire has a four-octave range! That means she can sing bass, tenor, alto, and soprano voice parts.
  • Although Breanna is able to sing almost any part she wants to, why do you think it is important for her to choose to sing as a soprano?
  • Ave Maria is a very popular and well-known piece, especially in the opera world. When you listen to Breanna sing, what images come to mind? How does your mood change throughout the piece?
