Bellingham Symphony Orchestra and Pickford Film Center Pair Classical Music and Movies

October 31, 2024

The Bellingham Symphony Orchestra has teamed up with Pickford Film Center to bring a screening of Chevalier to Bellingham the week after the symphony performs the famed composer’s Violin Concerto as part of its “Rising Up” concert on January 26, 2025.

“We began this partnership last season with a screening of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which sold out,” says BSO Executive Director Gail Ridenour. “This season, we’re doing Chevalier for our concert that features Chevalier de Saint Georges’ Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 5, No. 2."

Chavalier de Saint-Georges was a violinist, conductor, and composer in the court of Marie Antoinette who also excelled at fencing and was an accomplished dancer.

“Sharing this film makes for a nice start to Black History Month on February 1st,” adds Pickford Film Center’s Melissa Tamminga.

The award-winning Chevalier will be shown at the Pickford on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Described as “...inspired by the incredible true story of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. The illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr. in a tour de force performance) rises to improbable heights in French society as a celebrated violinist-composer and fencer, complete with an ill-fated love affair and a falling out with Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton) and her court.”

Lead actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. has been praised by critics for his performance and the film lauded for the opportunity it provides to learn about this exceptional artist. The movie's themes include identity, self-discovery, and triumph over adversity.
