Guest Conductor David A. Rahbee leads our first concert of the new year, exploring the relationship between Haydn and Ravel. Haydn, considered the “father of the symphony” who wrote more than 100 works, experimented and refined the form throughout his life. Ravel, born 143 years after Haydn and known for his innovative piano pieces and orchestral works, wrote Menuet sur le nom d'Haydn in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the master composer’s death.

Ravel’s Menuet in the name of Haydn was written in 1909 to mark the 100th anniversary of Haydn's death.
Haydn taught Beethoven and Mozart and is known as the Father of the Symphony.
Chavalier de Saint-Georges was a violinist, conductor, and composer in the court of Marie Antoinette. He also excelled at fencing and was an accomplished dancer.
Haydn’s comic opera The World on the Moon was originally performed in Hungary in 1777.
Ravel’s piece is just 54 bars long with a theme based on Haydn's own name as a five-note motif.
Chavalier de Saint-Georges’ Violin Concerto includes solo violin, string orchestra, and basso continuo.
Haydn’s London Symphony was the Austrian composer’s final symphony.
